New Black Rhodium Charleston


Press release | Black Rhodium engineers have spent many years designing cables for our greater enjoyment of music. Probably the most important lesson we have learned is that all audible improvements in sound quality can be explained by understanding the Laws of Physics. So, this is where we start.


All cables obey the Laws of Physics
The Laws of Physics describe several effects that occur when electricity flows through a conductor. All these effects change the flow of electricity in the wire.

When the wire carries an audio signal of your music, these changes in flow of electricity can be heard as distortion to the music. And they spoil your enjoyment of your favourite music.

Black Rhodium engineers have discovered that there are at least seven Laws of Physics that affect the sound quality of an audio cable including conductor choice, insulation and its susceptibility to vibration and electrical interference.

Here is a brief list;

  1. Every metal has a different molecular structure – and sounds different
  2. Impurities and irregularities in the molecular structure can impair electron flow and distort music
  3. Insulating materials are not perfect and can absorb electrical charges from the wire and return them to the wire causing a time-smeared distortion called Dielectric Absorption
  4. Friction between screens and some insulation can generate electric charges which add noise to the music signal
  5. Radio frequency signals from radio broadcasts, computers and switching transients can modulate the music signal in your cable and add electrical noise.
  6. Magnetic fields caused by electric currents in nearby cables, including other cores of your own cables, generate magnetic field that alter the flow of electricity in your cable
  7. Mechanical vibration in your cable can be caused not only by external components (your loudspeakers have to vibrate to create sound) but also by the mechanical forces from electrical and magnetic fields within the cables. These forces modulate the sound and the resultant effect will distort the music signal in your cable

Audible distortion in your music is not good. How do we remove it?
To counteract these forms of audible distortion, Black Rhodium has tested many different solutions. Some are well known techniques used universally in cable design whilst others have been specially developed by Black Rhodium.
In many cases, Black Rhodium has employed two or more different ‘distortion busting’ design techniques to reduce each type of audible distortion. These act complementarily to deliver greater freedom from distortion and more enjoyment of music.

Very extensive listening tests have been conducted and very many cable samples with small but significant differences in materials and construction have been auditioned. By the way, some of these samples can be purchased at half price from our Proto range.

The hours of auditions have created a wealth of valuable design information. This design information has been used to create a ‘design recipe’ that delivers the optimum value in sound quality in relation to its cost.

The end result is a cable that delivers outstanding sound quality and value for money.

Minimising all types of distortion in cables
Before we commenced designing Charleston, we were aware that we needed to work on achieving lower audible distortion in two areas of design. That set us a challenge we had to overcome. Eventually, by persistence and ingenuity, we achieved that ambition.

A quantum leap in sound quality
Listening tests carried out by Black Rhodium demonstrated a ‘Quantum Leap’ in musical quality when using a cable designed from scratch to minimise ALL types of cable distortion compared with a cable designed to minimise MOST distortion types.

In recent years, Black Rhodium cables have excelled in reducing MOST types of cable distortion and have won many ‘5 Star’ awards for their excellence. We now have the capability to minimise ALL distortion sources in cables and we are constantly amazed by the clarity and natural presentation of music.

Design and manufacture of Charleston
Charleston has been designed from scratch to minimise all types of distortion. Its construction encompasses several layers of insulation, screening and vibration damping assembled stage by stage in the optimum order to deliver outstanding sound.

The attendant care we attach to construction ensures that all cables will perform reliably.

High end rhodium plated locking connectors
Charleston Loudspeaker cables are terminated with Black Rhodium Locking rhodium plated plugs.

Rhodium plating is applied to the Black Rhodium locking plugs to ensure a cleaner and less corroded contact is maintained between the plug and socket and its effect gives a much livelier and more exciting sound from the music.

Additional security of the connection between the plug and terminal is achieved by turning the screw cover to the plug. This creates a very strong connection that is not easily removed by force.

The lack of compromise of design in Charleston requires special consideration when used for Bi-Wire loudspeakers. Applying the special design procedures for building Charleston loudspeaker cable to a set of loudspeaker links would not be an elegant solution and we recommend using high quality speaker links such as Black Rhodium Waltz speaker links as a temporary solution.

Black Rhodium strongly recommends that where Charleston is used with Bi-Wire loudspeakers, then a second set of cables should be used as above. Charleston can be supplied fitted with rhodium plated spades where there is only one sets of terminals on the amplifier. The practice of Bi-Amping, in which separate amplifiers are used, is will produce even better sonic results.
